Kyle Mayers cracked a brilliant 36-ball 79 while Mujeeb Ur Zadran bagged a three-for as current table-toppers Barbados Royals downed Trinbago Knight Riders by eight wickets in a2 CPL 2022 game played in Port of Spain. Royals chased down the target of 133 in 16 overs.
In pursuit of the modest target, Royals did lose Rahkeem Cornwall early in the second over, with Daryn Dupavillion taking the scalp. However, Mayers and Corbin Bosch set the platform with a 98-run partnership for the second wicket. Mayers in particular took the aggressive route, tonking Ravi Rampaul for two boundaries and a six in the third over. Mayers then proceeded to whip and pull Jayden Seales.
When Kieron Pollard introduced himself into the attack, Mayers greeted him with a couple of hits that crossed the boundary rope. Eventually, he fell to a full toss from Dupavillion in the 12th over. By the time Mayers was dismissed, Royals required only 25 runs in over eight overs and with eight wickets still in hand. Bosch and Quinton de Kock duly took the side past the finishing line.
The bowlers had laid down the foundation stone for Royals’ win, with Mujeeb, Cornwall, Jason Holder and Obed McCoy sharing nine of the 10 wickets to fall. Mujeeb and Cornwall in particular played key roles by picking up the first four wickets to fall to leave Knight Riders in trouble at 37 for 4. Nicholas Pooran (52 off 43) and Sunil Narine (30 off 31) tried to resurrect the innings but Obed McCoy and Mujeeb combined to pick up the scalps of Pooran and Narine in a space of four deliveries to leave Knight Riders in further trouble. In fact, Knight Riders scored only 25 runs in 25 balls after the fall of Pooran and finished with a below par total.
Royals sit on top of the points table, having won all their six matches so far. On the other hand, Knight Riders are placed at the bottom of the table, with just one victory in five games.
